Partridge peas are an annual plant growing 1 - 2 feet tall in USDA zones 3 - 9.
Because the seed or pea remains in good condition during winter and early spring, Partridge Pea seed is one of the major food sources of quail species and other birds. Partridge Pea seeds are nutritious and their digestibility is generally high.
Partridge Peas often grow in dense stands, producing cover for upland game birds, small mammals, small non-game birds, and waterfowl. It is also attractive and adds a natural beauty to landscape settings. The flowers are rich in nectar and are important to bees and butterflies.
Sowing Rate: 1/2 lb per 1,000 square feet. Plant the seed directly outdoors in late winter or early spring before frost season has ended. Rake the seed under the soil ¼ inch. With a temperature of 55F, germination is usually within 28 days. Partridge Pea prefers full sun and it is not picky about soil conditions.
