About This Item
Ratibida pinnata is a hardy perennial that has several common names: Grey-headed Coneflower, Yellow Coneflower, and Prairie Coneflower. The flowers are on long stems and have yellow, drooping petals arranged around a grey-brown colored cone. They are excellent for cutting. Coneflower is a tolerant plant and accepts many conditions.
This Ratibida is a 3 - 5 foot tall perennial growing in USDA zones 3 - 10.
It puts on a beautiful display of color that attracts butterflies and when the cones dry, the seeds are eaten by birds. It is recommended to give Grey-headed Coneflower seed a cold treatment to aid in the germination process.
Either plant the seed directly outdoors in the late fall or moisten the seed in a paper towel, seal the seed and moist paper towel in a plastic bag and place it in the refrigerator for 30 days before planting outdoors in the spring after danger of frost has passed.
Sowing Rate: 1 ounce per 1,000 square feet. Press the seed into the soil and cover with ¼ - ½ inch of soil. With a temperature of 68 - 75F, germination is usually within 30 days. Grow Coneflower in full sun to partial shade and in rich, well-drained soil. Space plants 12 - 24 inches apart.
