About This Item
Helichrysum bracteatum is commonly referred to as Strawflower. These annuals are easy to establish from seed and fast to grow and bloom. They provide a wonderful color display in the garden with 2 inch daisy-like blooms. This Scarlet one will perform from spring through fall.
Strawflowers are 40 inch tall annuals that grow across the country in USDA zones 3 - 10.
Deadhead the spent blooms to keep them performing their best. An application of a balanced fertilizer during the growing season is helpful, and water them well during dry spells. Strawflowers are prized as a cut flower. They dry well and are considered to be everlasting.
Sow 3 - 4 seeds per plant. Start the seed indoors 6 – 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Press the seeds into the soil but do not cover. Keep the seed moist until germination. With temperatures of 72 - 76F, germination is normally within 10 days.
Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed. Space the plants 18 - 24 inches apart. For areas with a long growing season, the seed can be planted directly outdoors once temperatures are consistently warm. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in moist, well-drained soil. Helichrysum is usually resistant to deer.
