About This Item
Papaver orientale is known as the popular Oriental Poppy. This variety, Beauty of Livermere, is very impressive with crimson red, ruffled blooms. It has a black, cone-like center. The foliage emerges in early spring and is slightly hairy.
This orientale popppy is a 32 inch tall perennial growing in USDA zones 2 - 7.
After blooming, the plant will go dormant for the remainder of the summer, so plant it with later blooming perennials or annuals for continuous color and to fill in the space. Oriental Poppy prefers cooler climates but can be grown as annuals in areas with warmer winters.
They make great cut flowers and they are very attractive to beneficial insects and hummingbirds. Start the seed indoors in late winter or directly sow the seed in a prepared seedbed outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Press the seed into the soil but do not cover it.
Sowing Rate: 4 seeds per plant. Keep the seed moist until germination. At a temperature of 68F, germination usually occurs within 21 days. Space the plants 18 inches apart. Grow in full sun and in well-drained soil. Oriental Poppy is usually resistant to deer.
