Verbena is a low growing perennial used as a ground cover in USDA zones 5 - 9. These spreading plants only reach approximately 8 inches tall.
Sow 1,000 seeds to cover approximately 20 square feet for a mass of these rose colored flowers.
Verbena canadensis is commonly known as Rose Verbena. It is a perennial that makes a marvelous ground cover, or it looks lovely in containers and baskets, spilling over the sides. Rose Verbena has violet-rose flower clusters, and it will bloom from late spring right up until the first frosts of fall. Butterflies find Rose Verbena to be irresistible, yet deer and rabbits usually leave it alone.
If planting in the spring, give the seed a cold treatment in the refrigerator before sowing the seeds. Grow Rose Verbena in full sun to partial shade and in well-drained soil. Space plants 18 - 25 inches apart.
Trimming Verbena back 1 – 2 times during the growing season tidies their appearance and stimulates more blooms.
