About This Item
Primula malacoides is commonly called Fairy Primrose. Plant them in the fall in frost-free climates for winter color and plant them in the spring in colder zones. This variety has crimson red blossoms that are whorled around a leafless stem. The stems can have dozens of flowers that remain for weeks.
Fairy primrose is a 8 - 10 inch tall perennial flower growing in USDA zones 8 - 10 or as an indoor house plant.
Fairy Primrose can be used either in beds or in containers, and they are especially nice growing alongside spring bulbs. Fairy Primrose also makes a nice flowering houseplant. If seeds are started in mid-summer, the plant will have blooms from December – March when the spent blooms are deadheaded regularly.
Sowing Rate: 4 seeds per plant Start Fairy Primrose seed indoors in winter for early spring transplants. Cover the seed lightly with peat moss and keep the seed moist. With a temperature range of 64 – 72F, germination is usually in 28 days.
Grow Fairy Primrose in partial shade and in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Fairy Primrose usually is resistant to deer.
