About This Item
Penstemon grandiflorus is also known by two common names: Shell Leaf Penstemon or Large Beardtongue Penstemon. It has large pink to lavender colored blooms that measure 2 inches across, and they are very attractive to bumble bees and humming birds.
This penstemon is a 2 - 3 foot tall perennial growing in USDA zones 3 - 8.
Shell-Leaf Penstemon is considered to be endangered in the wild. Grown in the wild flower garden it is a true treasure that gives a wonderful display. The Penstemon seeds benefit from the cold, wet conditions of winter, so it is recommended to start Shell-Leaf Penstemon seed directly outdoors in the late fall after there have been several frosts.
Prepare a seedbed, press the seed into the soil and cover lightly with garden sand. In the spring when temperatures begin to warm up, germination is usually within 30 days with sturdy plants by mid-spring.
Sowing Rate: 1 ounce per 700 square feet. Grow Shell-Leaf Penstemon in full sun and in well-drained soil that contains rocky material or grit. Space plants 18 - 24 inches apart.
