About This Item
Saponaria vaccaria, or commonly referred to as Soapwort, is a wonderful annual that blooms from late spring through summer. Soapwort is often found in florists’ shops, and it’s a must-have for cutting gardens. This Pink Beauty variety has rose pink colored, 5-petaled blooms, and they are so thick that they create a cloud-like effect.
Soapwort is a 2 foot tall annual growing across the country in USDA zones 3 - 10.
Saponaria make a great filler in arrangements much the same way that Baby’s Breath is used. Soapwort is known for reseeding so that next summer will have the same wonderful display.
Soapwort seeds need a cold treatment to break the seed’s dormancy. Some gardeners sow the seed outdoors in the fall so the seed receives the cold temperatures of winter. Other gardeners use the refrigerator for the cold treatment and start the seeds indoors in the early spring.
Sowing Rate: 2 - 3 seeds per plant. Cover the seeds with 1/8 inch of soil. Keep seed moist until germination. With a temperature of 65F, germination is usually within 28 days. Space the plants 18 inches apart. Grow this annual in full sun to partial shade and in well-draining soil. Soapwort is usually resistant to deer.
