About This Item
Matthiola incana is a wonderful flower that provides brilliant colors, a spicy fragrance and a nectar source for butterflies. It is commonly referred to as Stock or Hoary Stock, and this variety is called Ten Week Stock. It is grown as an annual in most zones, but in frost-free zones, it will remain as a perennial.
Stock is a 14 inch tall annual growing in USDA zones 3 - 10.
Stock likes a position in full sun, and it prefers gritty, fast-draining soils. This variety has sturdy stems that are full of tightly clustered deep rose colored blooms. Stock makes an excellent cut flower with a long vase life. They grow best in areas with cool summers, like coastal areas.
For the hot southern climates, grow Stock in the fall for lovely color in the fall and early winter. Start the seed indoors 6- 8 weeks before setting out. Press the seed into the soil and cover with 1/8 inch of soil.
Sowing Rate: 3 - 4 seeds per plant. This seed needs light and continuous moisture for proper germination. With a temperature of 70F, germination is usually within 28 days. Transplant into the garden and space the plants 14 inches apart.
