About This Item
The stems are covered with long white hairs giving the foliage a white-green look. The spoon-shaped leaves are up to 4 inches long and 2 inches across. The violet-blue flowers form on spikes that bloom from the bottom up, and they are excellent for cutting.
Hoary vervain is a 2 - 3 foot tall perennial growing in USDA zones 3 - 9.
Butterflies use Hoary Vervain as a host plant for larvae. It is fairly drought tolerant once it is established. Hoary Vervain seed needs a cold treatment to aid in the germination process.
Either plant the seed directly outdoors in the late fall or moisten the seed in a paper towel, and place it in the refrigerator for 30 days before planting outdoors in the spring after danger of frost has passed. Press the seed into the soil and cover lightly with peat moss. With a temperature of 70F, germination is usually within 25 days.
Sowing Rate: 1 ounce per 600 square feet. Grow Verbena in full sun and in most any soil. Space plants 12 - 24 inches apart. Usually, Hoary Vervain is resistant to both deer and rabbits. Approximately 33,000 seeds per ounce.
