About This Item
A popular perennial herb that easily grows from seed is Spearmint. Mentha spicata reaches 12 – 36 inches in height, and it can spread indefinitely. Confining it to a container is recommended if you want to control the amount of spread.
Spearmint plants grow as perennials in USDA zones 4 - 9 and reach varying heights anywhere from 12 - 36 inches.
Spearmint has spikes of pink colored flowers that appear in early summer. The foliage is highly aromatic with lance-shaped leaves that have a wrinkly texture. Spearmint is used in cooking, in teas, and potpourri.
Harvest the leaves when the plant reaches 12 inches in height. Hang bunches of leaves upside-down in a dark, well-ventilated warm place. Leaves can also be frozen as well.
Sowing Rate: 3 - 5 seeds per plant. Start Spearmint directly outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Press the seed into the soil, cover it with 1/8 inch of soil and keep it moist. With a temperature of 60 - 70F, germination is usually in 21 days. Spearmint prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Space the plants 18 inches apart.
