About This Item
Growing in floodplains, swamps, stream banks and wet meadows, Eupatorium maculatum is a hardy perennial that can be considered an herb, a wild flower, a butterfly plant, or an ornamental. It’s so diverse! Commonly called Joe Pyeweed, this tall plant has clusters of dark pink flowers, and it blooms all summer and right up until frosts begin.
Joe pyeweed is a 4 - 6 foot tall perennial growing in USDA zones 4 - 9.
Many butterflies are attracted to its rich nectar. Some gardeners recommend staking it until it is well established. It does need protection from the wind as the stalks are hollow.
Start Joe Pyeweed seed directly outside in spring after the danger of frost has passed. Prepare a seedbed, tamp the seed into the soil and cover with only 1/8 inch of soil. Keep the seed moist. With a temperature range of 64 – 72F, germination is usually within 35 days.
Sowing Rate: 1 ounce per 1,500 square feet or 4 seeds per plant. Grow Joe Pyeweed in full sun to partial shade and in moist, well-drained soil. Space plants 24 - 48 inches apart. Pinch the young plant back to encourage a bushier growth. Joe Pyeweed is considered to be a liberal self-sower. Approximately 95,000 seeds per ounce.
