About This Item
Zizia aurea is commonly called Golden Alexander. It is a short-lived perennial that has branching, erect stems with flat clusters of tiny yellow flowers that have a lacy doily appearance. Golden Alexander is native to much of the United States and grows in the wild.
Zizia is a 12 - 30 inch tall perennial growing in USDA zones 3 - 9.
It provides nectar to many beneficial insects and is a host plant to Black Swallowtail Butterfly larvae. Golden Alexander seed needs a cold treatment to aid in the germination process.
Either plant the seed directly outdoors in the late fall or moisten the seed in a paper towel, and place it in the refrigerator for 60 days before planting outdoors in the spring after danger of frost has passed. Press the seed into soil, cover it with ¼ inch of soil and keep the seed moist.
Sowing Rate: 1 ounce per 225 square feet. With a temperature of 70F, germination is usually in 21 days. Grow Golden Alexander in full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, loamy soil that is well-drained. Space plants 8 - 18 inches apart. Approximately 9,300 seeds per ounce.
