About This Item
Rue is a evergreen perennial herb grown from seeds grown in USDA Zones 5 - 11. It will reach 18 - 24 inches when planted from seeds and is grown as an ornamental as well as for medicinal value.
Ruta graveolens, gets small clusters of yellow flowers near midsummer, held well above the foliage and often covering most of the plant. Rue grows best in full sun and thrives in poor sandy soils, and hot, dry sites.
It is an attractive standout in the herb garden. It's often included since its leaves are used sparingly in salads and oriental dishes. It can be an attractive addition to flower gardens as well. You can add them in raised beds, flower beds and in pots & containers as well. When pruning or deadheading, it is recommended to wear gardening gloves, as Rue will secrete an oil that may irritate the skin.
It establishes a deep root system the first year of growth, while the plant life on the surface wilts with frost. Rue plants will then reemerge and regrow in the Spring.
Sow 2 - 3 of these seeds for every plant you want growing. Prune back rue to the old wood in spring to encourage bushiness. An attractive container plant, rue is often grown in a pot on the patio or on a sunny windowsill.
