About This Item
Centranthus ruber ‘Albus’ is commonly called Jupiter’s Beard, and it is a favorite of gardeners everywhere. It is a wonderful source of long-lasting bright white color. The large flower clusters are fragrant and attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
Jupiter's Beard is a 24 - 32 inch tall perennial growing in USDA zones 4 - 9.
Jupiter’s Beard makes a great, long-lasting cut flower as well. Deadheading encourages continual blooming.
Start the seed indoors in early spring for transplanting after danger of frost has passed. Or, for areas with a long growing season, after frost season, start the seed directly outdoors in a prepared seedbed. Press the seed into the soil but do not cover it. Keep the seed moist until germination.
Sowing Rate: 1000 seeds covers 75 square feet. With a temperature of 65F, germination is usually within 21 days. Transplant the young plants outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Space the plants 12 - 15 inches apart.
Grow in full sun to partial shade and in moist, well-drained soil. Jupiter’s Beard is usually resistant to deer. It is a liberal self-sower and will spread. Deadheading the spent blooms is helpful in keeping the seeding to a minimum.
