About This Item
Silphium laciniatum, or commonly referred to as Compass Plant, is another giant perennial that may take several years to reach its full size. Once well-established, these plants are drought tolerant and easy maintenance.
Compass plant is a 4 to 8 foot tall yellow flowering plant growing as a perennial in USDA zones 3 - 9.
They have a large taproot, up to 15 feet deep, so loose, loamy soil is the best. Compass Plant is often seen with tall prairie grasses like Big Bluestem. It produces as many as 30 large flowers that resemble wild sunflowers and are very attractive to insects.
Sowing Rate: 1 ounce per 100 square feet. Either plant the seed directly outdoors in the late fall or moisten the seed in a paper towel, seal the seed and moist paper towel in a plastic bag and place it in the refrigerator for 60 days before planting outdoors in the spring after danger of frost has passed.
Press the seed into the soil and cover with ¼ - ½ inch of soil. With a temperature of 65F, germination is usually within 21 days. Grow Compass Plant in full sun and in loamy, moist soil. Space plants 18 - 30 inches apart. Because of their height, it is not recommended to plant them on slopes.
