About This Item
Exquisite purple veined, magenta flowers on strong growing plants. The handsome plants grow 3 - 4 feet tall at maturity with a spread of 24 inches and have a rigidly upright form, with strong erect stems that are more upright than other Malva varieties.
Commonly called Mallow, Purple Mallow, or French Hollyhock it is a short-lived perennial that is often grown as a biennial or an annual. It will flower the first season from seed, is very easy to grow and will bloom profusely in a sunny position, the flowers smother the foliage and rise above the foliage from summer through to mid autumn.
They are very attractive to bees and butterflies and are terrific as cut flowers. A good addition to a mixed border, this electric, willowy plant mingles well in the herbaceous border with shrubs of equal stature or with other taller plants with spires and spikes such as Verbena bonariensis. The rounded leaves remain green in colour throughout the season and create a soft backdrop.
Establishing hollyhock from flower seeds is very rewarding. To get a jump start on the growing season, you can sow Malva French Hollyhock seeds indoors or in the greenhouse 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost date.
Sow 2 - 3 seeds per plant and space 36 inches apart
