About This Item
Salvia officinalis is commonly known as Sage, and it is both a medicinal and culinary herb that has been used for centuries. This perennial is also very attractive to beneficial insects and hummingbirds.
Sage is an 18 - 30 inch tall perennial growing in USDA zones 5 - 9.
Sage has an erect habit with branches producing multiple spikes of blooms that mauve in color. Harvest the herb plant lightly the first year and prune out the woody stems each spring. Replace plants every 3 – 4 years to keep plants highly productive.
Sowing Rate: 1 seed per 2 inches. Sage seed can be started indoors 8 – 10 weeks before the last frost. Or, for areas with a very long growing season, start the seed outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Prepare a seedbed by loosening the top 2 inches of soil and weeding. Cover the seed with 1/16 inch of soil. Keep seed moist until germination. With a temperature of 60 – 70F, germination is usually within 21 days.
Space the plants 12 - 18 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in moist but well-draining soil. Sage is usually resistant to deer.
